Coastal Geology

 

Big Island is relatively "new" in geological terms and has not settled into the ocean and created vast expansive reefs like you'll find in Florida, Bahamas or Mexico. Here on big island we have a short fringing reef followed by a steep drop off into very deep ocean. In some locations around big island you may be in 600-800' of water only a couple hundred yards offshore. Although big island may not have fringing reefs extending far offshore, we do have miles of coastline that provides plenty of habitat for reef fish such as Kole, Umaemulei, various goat fish species and prize catches such as Ulua, Uku and Mu.

Dive locations

​

We operate off the Kona coastline which is the leeward side of Big Island. The Kona side is generally calm due to the large mountains of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa creating a massive wind shadow. This massive wind shadow allows us to access calm, clear and beautiful waters virtually year around. We begin our adventure with the classroom portion of the day at 7:30AM at our Kona Coastline Training Facility. Our classroom is open air style, designed to immediately engage you with the elements of our beautiful Hawaiian Islands. We pick our dive sites solely based on conditions for any given dive day, taking into account, wind, swell, visibility and other variables to ensure we are on the best dive location for the day.

 

​Big Island spearfishing is for the adventurous and often requires some off the beaten path ocean entries. Bumpy roads, 4 wheel drive and a cooler full of ice is how we do things over here on Big Island. Fresh caught Kole, fried to perfection is our favorite end to a day of spearfishing.
