Aloha I Ke Kai Program

Land Acknowledgment

Top Shot Spearfishing acknowledges Hawaiʻi as an Indigenous space whose original people are today identified as Native Hawaiians (Kanaka Maoli). The ʻāina on which we make our lives and livelihoods is located in the ahupuaʻa of Kalaoa. We recognize that her majesty Queen Liliʻuokalani yielded the Hawaiian Kingdom and these territories under duress and protest to the United States to avoid the bloodshed of her people. We further recognize that generations of Indigenous Hawaiians and their knowledge systems shaped Hawaiʻi in a sustainable way that allows us to enjoy her gifts today. Colonization is an active, persistent process. Indigenous communities continue to be resilient in protecting their ecological and cultural ways of life despite ongoing oppression. Top Shot Spearfishing respects, shares, and supports this commitment to revitalize Indigenous knowledge, particularly with regards to our fisheries.
